Awesome

So, last night was the first round of volleyball playoffs for the league I'm in... our team name is DeezNuts (which has been our team name for EVERYTHING for like 5+ years). The team is made up of me, Erin, Angie, Brandon, Chad and Eric.

I started thinking back to how we all met and how this team came to be... hopefully I've got this all right:
- obviously, Erin and I go way back : )
- Angie is friends with Brian & Justin (Justin worked with Hany); both Brian and Justin have played vball with us in the past as well
- Brandon worked with Hany (and has since played on our vball, bowling and football teams for a few years now)
- Chad is a friend of Brandon's
- Eric is a friend of Kim's who is a friend of Theresa's who is a friend of Shannon's who worked with Hany. Kim played for a season on our football team and she invited Eric to play with us and the rest is history.

Hmmm... I'm starting to see a pattern here. Hany knows a lot of people! : )

ANYWAY, we won in the first round of playoffs. We won the first and third games... I don't know what happened in the second game. We had two subs because Erin and Chad couldn't make it. But, the subs both picked up right where Erin and Chad left off and they did great. Next week are the finals... game on!

After v-ball, Angie, Brandon, Eric and I headed to the bowling alley so Brandon could pre-bowl for this Sunday's game. He's flying to India today and won't be able to make it. (Funny story - it's Brandon's 30th birthday on May 9th - he leaves from Chicago on May 8th and arrives in India on May 10th - so he never really turns 30.) Brandon bowled awesome (504 series), which is great for us since we need to win on Sunday to stay in 1st place in the league. He was a little wigged out at first bowling on a Wed night in sweaty v-ball clothes and by himself, but he managed to pull it off.

Fire up the grill!

Tonight, after work Matt and I made a trip to the Home Depot so he could pick up a grill.

Some assembly was required...

Less than an hour later, we were eating dogs from the grill... awesome! : )

Bowling

I can't believe it, but our bowling team (me, Erin, Brett and our friend Brandon) is in 1st place in the league with one week to go! It must be the genes... my parents are both really good bowlers. : )

This week, we swept the other team. Even with the massive hangover I had (I'll post about that later), I managed to bowl well. I even won the first two rounds of bowling poker with three-of-a-kind both times. Brett won the last round with a full house. He had a really good night of bowling, too.

I was amazed when I walked into the bowling alley and saw Brandon had already bought a pitcher of beer (it was his birthday party the night before that was the cause of my massive hangover). I had vowed that I would NOT be drinking anything except water. Of course, since it was his birthday celebration, I had to make an exception and have a beer. : )

Next week, our team plays Four Shadows (Matt, Clint, Reuter and Fubar's team)... what a great way to end the season!!!

Surprise!

Saturday night, Brandon's girlfriend Angie and his parents threw a surprise 30th birthday party for him at Celtic Crown. Angie had reserved the private party room upstairs. I had never been to the bar before, but it was a really fun place.

Matt, Brett, Erin and I showed up around 6:30... there was an open bar from 6:30-7pm and then from 7-10pm, it was $30 all you can drink and eat (they had burgers, wings, fries, veggies, chips/salsa... that kind of stuff). Angie and Brandon and his parents showed up around 7:10 and he was totally surprised!

Hany and Grant were running a little late and they showed up at almost the same time as Brandon, but luckily they saw Brandon before he saw them and ran back out the way!

We hung out in the party room and met Brandon's parents and brother and a friend of his from high school.

Here's the first round of shots courtesy of Erin... the beginning of the end!

Then, we headed out to the bar area around 10pm after the party package was over and lo and behold... WILD KARAOKE was just about to start! The night just got even better. : )

At this point, I think Erin put in requests for about 50 songs, just randomly picking them as she saw ones that looked fun. The bar was crowded, but not too bad and we were able to get quite a lot of mic-time. The karaoke DJ was cool and he had quite a few rap songs (Brandon's favorite). I can't even remember all the songs we sang (or as the night went on... we screamed). I think voice quality definitely drops as the amount of alcohol in one's system increases. I think everyone took a turn (or two) on the mic...

Erin had control of my camera and took TONS of pictures, if you can't tell. We all had a really great time. Of course, we were paying for it Sunday morning.

Crazy Weather

Wow! The weather is craazzzazzzy right now! It just poured sideways... now it's starting to get sunny again.

Date night

Matt and I went out for sushi last night at Izumi Sushi in his neighborhood. We go to this place quite a bit because it's close and we like the food there. You can bring your own wine (no corkage fee), but they also sell wine, liquor, beer, etc. They have my favorite roll there... Strawberry Maki (Superwhite tuna, tempura crunch, kampyo and hot sauce; layered with spicy tuna, strawberry slices and unagi sauce... it's on the right in the pic). I love that there are strawberries on the top! It's on the specials list, but that list hasn't changed since we started going there. They just don't want to update the menu, I guess.

Last night, we were trying to figure out what everything was in the roll... we weren't quite sure what kampyo was. Matt thought it might be some sort of mushroom because it was dark brown... turns out it is a gourd that has been soaked in water to soften it (thanks to foodnetwork.com). Also, they use the un-softened gourd to tie up sushi rolls. Interesting. Learn something new every day. : )
